Paul Moody – Writer and Musician … “Weller was always a gateway to something new – music, books, art, fashion.”

Paul Moody’s journey with Paul Weller’s music is one that bridges the gap between devoted fandom and professional collaboration. From discovering The Jam as a teenager in North London, swept up in the energy and style of the Mod revival, to later interviewing Weller for the NME for Stanley Road, to conducting the DVD interviews for As Is Now and writing sleeve notes for Wake Up the Nation, Paul’s story is rich with personal anecdotes and cultural insight.

In this conversation, originally recorded for elements of my book, Paul reflects on the seismic impact of The Jam, the shock of their split, and the way Paul Weller’s constant drive for reinvention shaped not just his own life, but the direction of British music itself.

The episode explores his experiences at legendary gigs, his embrace of The Style Council’s optimism, and the thrill of moving from the crowd to sitting in Weller’s living room, sharing late-night conversations about music, art, and the creative process.

As a journalist, musician, and lifelong fan, Paul offers a unique perspective on Paul Weller’s career – from the cultural fallout of The Jam’s break-up to the genre-shifting internationalism of The Style Council, to the creative rebirth of the solo years and the enduring appeal of modernism.

We chat about Paul Weller’s attention to visual detail, his restless pursuit of new sounds, and the sense of freedom that comes from refusing to stand still.

This is a dive into fandom, music journalism, and the enduring legacy of one of Britain’s greatest songwriters…

Paul’s own band, The Studio 68!, were a riot of colour and chaos at a time when everyone else seemed to be wearing plaid and staring at their shoes. Their debut album, Portobellohello, is a lost gem – full of Hammond-driven Mod pop, wild stories, and a real sense of youthful adventure. The band are very much alive and kicking – still making music and playing gigs with a new album on the way this autumn… Head over to Studio 68!’s website to find out more and listen to the music.
