On this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, I am joined by David Quantick – a writer whose work spans over 4 decades now. He joined NME as a staff writer in 1983.
We dig in to stories of The Jam, The Style Council and Paul Weller Solo… and David’s connections to the man and his music…
He also just happens to be a hugely successful comedy writer and screenwriter for some of the most outstanding TV and Radio series over the past 30 years with credits for shows such as On the Hour, The Day Today, The Thick of It, Blue Jam, Harry Hill’s TV Burp, Veep (for which he won an Emmy in 2015) and Avenue 5.

FIRST OFF, SOME striking things. The man who used to specialise in doing soul songs really badly is now fond of doing funk standards reasonably well. (FACT: Eight out of ten Mods would still rather see Paul Weller cripple ‘In the Midnight Hour’ than watch him get ‘The Razor’s Edge’ nearly right.) Mick Talbot has a singing voice almost exactly like Paul Weller’s. The drummer, Steve, wears a glove to express solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world. Paul Weller still dresses badly.

2020 – Night Train

A woman wakes up, frightened and alone – with no idea where she is. She’s in a room but it’s shaking and jumping like it’s alive. Stumbling through a door, she realizes she is in a train carriage. A carriage full of the dead.
This is the Night Train. A bizarre ride on a terrifying locomotive, heading somewhere into the endless night. How did the woman get here? Who is she? And who are the dead? As she struggles to reach the front of the train, through strange and horrifying creatures with stranger stories, each step takes her closer to finding out the train’s hideous secret. Next stop: unknown.
2019 – All My Colors

All My Colors is a darkly comic novel about a man who remembers a book that may not exist, with dire consequences. A bizarre, mind-bending story at the intersection of Richard Bachman, Charlie Kaufman and Franz Kafka.
