Roger Pilling – Paul Weller’s School Friend Paul Weller Fan Podcast

First Days and Finding the Clan: Roger arrived at Sheerwater School at age 13, drawn into a close-knit clique that included Paul Weller and a handful of classmates. At this time, Roger says that Paul wasn’t yet showing any musical prodigy; rather, he stood out for a quiet confidence and distinct style – even in school uniform, Paul somehow looked different. The early connection between Roger and Paul was based on curiosity and camaraderie, not music.

Inside the Weller Household: Visits to Paul’s home, on Stanley Road, revealed a unique family atmosphere. Unlike the typical sparse teenager’s bedroom, Paul’s room was filled with Beatles posters, a record player, a guitar, and stacks of albums. Paul’s parents, Ann and John, fostered an encouraging environment – one marked by warmth, pride, and friendship rather than hierarchy.

The Making of a Dream: Paul’s musical ambitions were evident early – he made it clear to Roger his intention to form a band as soon as he left school. Yet, Paul rarely spoke of dedicated practice or hard work, instead quietly devouring music, learning guitar, and developing his taste in the privacy of his room. Roger reflects on the extraordinary, unseen commitment Weller must have given to his craft behind closed doors.

Seeding The Jam: Friendship and Formation: Roger played a crucial role in the Jam’s origins, introducing Steve Brookes to Paul, and being involved in the earliest iterations of school-aged bands – though Roger himself admits music wasn’t his calling. He recalls practicing with Paul and Steve, and the local venues and youth clubs where the band cut their teeth under the guidance (and relentless networking) of Paul’s father John.

From Fan to Friend on the Road: As The Jam’s career took flight, Roger sometimes drifted apart due to life’s changes, but was always welcomed back. Paul, by then a national star, never let fame affect their relationship. Roger reminisces about seeing the band live—citing moments like being namechecked from the stage at Bridlington Spa—and joining tours, soundchecks, and after-show hangs, while remaining a respectful observer of Paul’s time and growing circle.

Transitions and Enduring Bonds: The Jam’s breakup, The Style Council era, and Paul’s solo years brought life changes for Roger, including moves and family commitments. Even if years passed between meetings, when the friends reconnected it was as if no time had gone by – warm, humorous, and always grounded. Later, visits to Weller’s Black Barn studio became cherished occasions, with long evenings spent catching up, sharing meals, and witnessing still-constant creativity.

The Weller That Never Changes: Roger’s ultimate portrait of Paul is of someone remarkably unchanged at heart – a figure still driven by the same restless musical curiosity and boyish fandom that began on Stanley Road, never losing sight of his friends or his roots, no matter how high he climbed.
